Shuyuan (Joy) holds a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the Pennsylvania State University and an M.A. in Bilingual Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Prior to joining Brown, she worked for over eight years with linguistically and culturally diverse student populations in urban and suburban school settings. Her primary professional experience and interests focus on providing linguistic and cultural support for multilingual international students in postsecondary academic contexts. At Penn State University, she served as an instructor and practicum supervisor for multilingual writing and academic speaking courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Joy is passionate about supporting English as an Additional Language students’ development of intercultural communicative repertoires and skills to navigate the communicative demands of using English in global higher education and beyond. Her recent research on these topics has been published and is forthcoming in leading peer-reviewed journals in the field. Joy is committed to developing and translating her professional and research expertise into evidence-based advising and instructional support services for multilingual international students across disciplinary fields.
