Academic Tutoring Staff

The Academic Tutoring Program employs 125 undergraduate peer tutors who have a passion for teaching and learning, and have demonstrated proficiency in the course they are tutoring. The Tutoring Program's diverse group of peer tutors thrives on sharing knowledge, tips, and learning strategies to help peers gain a better understanding of course material and succeed academically.

    Janet Peters is the Assistant Dean of the College for Curricular Support and Associate Director of the Academic Tutoring Program for the Sheridan Center for Teaching & Learning. She oversees the administrative, operational, and logistical aspects of Academic Tutoring, including the supervision and coordination of 125 student tutors supporting 66 introductory STEM and language courses. Janet also oversees Vertex, a summer pre-calculus Bridge program for incoming students, and is an academic advisor.

    She enjoys meeting and mentoring students and is committed to helping students thrive academically, socially, and as peer educators. Janet earned her B.A. in Psychology from Rhode Island College and M.A. in Higher Education Administration from Louisiana State University.

    Prior to joining the Brown University community, Carrie was a Senior Managing College Advisor for a non-profit that supports low-income and first-generation students in applying to and graduating from college. Before that, she helped build the college and career department for a private K-12 school that focuses on students who are gifted and also living with a disability. For 14 years, Carrie was a sailing coach at various community boating centers for historically underserved youth in New York City and Boston. She uses a consultative, human-centered approach to support her students and colleagues. Carrie holds an M.S.Ed. in School Counseling and a B.A. in Human Services and Rehabilitation Studies.

Undergraduate Leadership Team

Amaya Allen is a junior from New Jersey studying Economics on the Public Policy track. She has three semesters of experience tutoring ECON 0110. At Brown, she serves as the Co-President of the Economics DUG and Vice President of Brown Christian Union. She also works as a research assistant for the School of Public Health and for the Economics department. In her free time, Amaya loves going to the gym, reading romantic comedy and literary fiction books, and exploring different coffee shops and bakeries around Providence. Amaya expects to graduate in May 2025 with an A.B. in Economics and in May 2026 with an MPH degree.

Eugenia Ampofo is a senior concentrating in Computational Biology and tutoring CHEM0330 (Equilibrium, Rate, and Structure). I'm from New Jersey but originally hail from Ghana. Outside of academics, I enjoy playing tennis, knitting (still a beginner) and coding simple games. I'm honored to be of help this school year!

Injy El-Dib is a senior concentrating in Biomedical Engineering on the pre-med track. She tutored ENGN 0040 for two semesters but will be branching out to Arabic as well. Outside of tutoring, she does research with the Shukla Lab on developing alternative therapeutics to treat antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. You can also find her volunteering in the ED of Miriam Hospital, writing for the BDH, and practicing with the club volleyball team. In her free time, Injy likes to crochet, read, and explore new hiking paths.

Natsuka Hayashida is a sophomore studying Applied Mathematics. She tutors MATH 0100. Natsuka is also part of the Meiklejohn Peer Advising Program and is a teaching assistant for MATH 0200. She is currently involved in child health research, and outside of school, she loves to play the piano and crochet. Natsuka expects to graduate in 2026 with an Sc.B in Applied Math.

Michael Jia is a senior concentrating in Neuroscience and Music. He has tutored both MATH0090 and NEUR1020, and plans to continue tutoring neuroscience courses. Michael is also involved in the O’Connor-Giles lab, performing research regarding the genetic basis of synaptic development. Michael is on Brown Science Olympiad board, and participates in dance groups including DAEBAK, Tempo, and Moli. In his free time Michael pursues music production and spends too much time on YouTube. Michael expects to graduate in May 2024 with an Sc.B. In Neuroscience and an A.B. in Music.

Maggie Jiang is a junior concentrating in Economics and Psychology. She has been tutoring ECON1110 for two semesters and has worked as a teaching assistant in the economics department. Outside of class, Maggie is involved in research with the COVID School Data Hub, where she analyzes the impact of COVID school policies on student performance. She’s also a part of TEDxBrownU, Brown Undergraduate Law Review, and Brown JPPE. In her free time, Maggie likes to explore new restaurants, go on long runs, and send all her friends videos of her corgi. Maggie expects to graduate in May of 2025 with an A.B. in Economics and Psychology.

Will Kemball-Cook is a senior concentrating in Neuroscience. He has four semesters of experience tutoring MATH0090. Outside of tutoring, Will works as an EMT and performs cognitive neuroscience research in the Song lab. Will is also on the club soccer team and likes to snowboard during winter breaks. Will expects to graduate in May 2024 with an Sc.B. in Neuroscience and then hopes to attend medical school.

Camilla Regalia is a senior concentrating in Neuroscience and has experience working as a BIOL 200 and BIOL 800 group tutor. Outside of the classroom, she loves to work with the Brown HOPE club and the Brown Refugee Youth Tutoring Group (BRYTE) as well as volunteer as a medical translator at the RI Free Clinic. She also works for the Wharton lab, looking at genetic ALS models in drosophila. In her free time, Camilla can be seen on the club soccer field, enjoying Heng Thai, or taking care of her numerous plants. Camilla expects to graduate in 2024 with an Sc.B. in Neuroscience and then hopes to pursue more research.

Anna Shlimak is a senior concentrating in Chemistry on the Chemical Biology track. She has one semester of experience tutoring Organic Chemistry (CHEM0350). Outside of tutoring, she is involved with research at the Minimally Invasive Urology Institute of Miriam Hospital and within the Department of Neurosurgery at the Warren-Alpert Medical School. She also tutors with BRYTE and is an active member of Brown Best Buddies and Scientists for a Sustainable World. Outside of school, she enjoys biking and playing the piano. Anna expects to graduate in May of 2024 with an Sc.B. in Chemistry. 

Francesca Vecchio is a senior concentrating in biomedical engineering and is a tutor for NEUR 0010 and BIOL 0280. Besides tutoring on the third floor of the SciLi, she does research in the Hoffman-Kim lab, focusing on biomedical applications to understanding and treating traumatic brain injury. You can often find her operating power tools as a monitor at the Brown Design Workshop, advising students as a Health Careers Peer Advisor, or volunteering at clinics in Providence. When she is not working on problem sets in Barus & Holley, she loves to bake cookies, work out at the Nelson, and read. 

Isabella Yoo is a junior concentrating in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Literary Arts on the pre-med track. She has three semesters of tutoring experience, where she has tutored both organic (CHEM 0350) and general (CHEM 0330) chemistry. Outside of tutoring, she is a weekly volunteer at Hasbro Children's Hospital. In her free time, Isabella can be found reading, watching Gilmore Girls, doing the New York Times crossword, or exploring Providence.
