Academic Tutoring Staff

The Academic Tutoring Program employs 125 undergraduate peer tutors who have a passion for teaching and learning, and have demonstrated proficiency in the course they are tutoring. The Tutoring Program's diverse group of peer tutors thrives on sharing knowledge, tips, and learning strategies to help peers gain a better understanding of course material and succeed academically.

    Janet Peters holds dual roles at Brown University that are integral to supporting student success and fostering an inclusive academic environment. She strives to eliminate educational inequities and to enhance the scholarly and professional goals of all learners at Brown. As the Associate Director of the Peer-led Academic Tutoring Program at the Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning, Janet oversees the development and management of the peer-led group tutoring program, a high-impact practice aimed to enhance the academic experience of undergraduates. Her responsibilities include managing staff, liaising between The College and Sheridan Center, and collaborating with deans, instructors, staff, and students about equity-minded practices. 

    Additionally, as Assistant Dean of Curricular Support for the College, Janet advocates for and advises students to help them develop pathways to achieve their academic and personal goals. Janet's commitment extends beyond academic support to cultivating lifelong skills that contribute to students' personal, educational, and professional growth both during their time at Brown and in their future endeavors.

    Janet Peters holds a Master of Arts degree in Higher Education Administration from Louisiana State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Rhode Island College. She is a proud recipient of the 2013 Wilson-DeBlois Award and has been an integral member of the Brown community since 2006.

    Prior to joining the Brown University community, Carrie was a Senior Managing College Advisor for a non-profit that supports low-income and first-generation students in applying to and graduating from college. Before that, she helped build the college and career department for a private K-12 school that focuses on students who are gifted and also living with a disability. For 14 years, Carrie was a sailing coach at various community boating centers for historically underserved youth in New York City and Boston. She uses a consultative, human-centered approach to support her students and colleagues. Carrie holds an M.S.Ed. in School Counseling and a B.A. in Human Services and Rehabilitation Studies.

Undergraduate Leadership Team

Amaya Allen is a senior from New Jersey studying Economics on the Public Policy track. She has four semesters of experience tutoring ECON 0110. At Brown, she serves as the Co-President of the Economics DUG and Vice President of Brown Christian Union. She also works as a research assistant for the School of Public Health and the Economics department. In her free time, Amaya loves going to the gym, reading romantic comedy and literary fiction books, and exploring different coffee shops and bakeries around Providence. Amaya expects to graduate in May 2025 with an A.B. in Economics and in May 2026 with an MPH degree.

Natsuka Hayashida is a senior studying Applied Mathematics. She tutors MATH 0100. Natsuka is also part of the Meiklejohn Peer Advising Program and is a teaching assistant for MATH 0200. She is currently involved in child health research, and outside of school, she loves to play the piano and crochet. Natsuka expects to graduate in 2026 with a Sc.B in Applied Math.

Maggie Jiang is a senior concentrating in Economics and Psychology. She has been tutoring ECON1110 for three semesters and has worked as a teaching assistant in the economics department. Outside of class, Maggie is involved in research with the COVID School Data Hub, where she analyzes the impact of COVID school policies on student performance. She’s also a part of TEDxBrownU, Brown Undergraduate Law Review, and Brown JPPE. In her free time, Maggie likes to explore new restaurants, go on long runs, and send all her friends videos of her corgi. Maggie expects to graduate in May of 2025 with an A.B. in Economics and Psychology.

Isabella Yoo is a junior concentrating in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Literary Arts on the pre-med track. She has four semesters of tutoring experience, where she has tutored organic (CHEM 0350) and general (CHEM 0330) chemistry. Outside of tutoring, she is a weekly volunteer at Hasbro Children's Hospital. In her free time, Isabella can be found reading, watching Gilmore Girls, doing the New York Times crossword, or exploring Providence.
